Check your calendar. Gandhi Jayanti lands on a Friday this year, so you get three days off in a row, 2 to 4 October. You don't need to apply for a single day of leave.

There's a catch, though. Most people waste weekends like this one. They open fifty tabs on Thursday night, find the good stays full, and end up at a mall. Sound familiar?

This guide helps you avoid that. We picked 10 weekend getaways from Delhi that fit into three days. Each one comes with the distance, the best things to do, who it suits, and one honest warning. You'll also find tips on booking, packing and checking the roads.

Gandhi Jayanti 2026: What You Actually Get

Gandhi Jayanti falls on Friday, 2 October 2026. Add Saturday and Sunday, and you have three days without using any leave. Want four? Ask for Monday 5 October off. The next holiday window is Dussehra on Tuesday 20 October. Taking Monday 19 off gives you four days again, and we covered it in ourGandhi Jayanti and Dussehra long weekend guide.

How the three days really work

Most weekend trips from Delhi run overnight. Here's the usual pattern:

●      Thursday night (1 Oct): Board the bus or tempo traveller at a Delhi metro pick-up point.

●      Friday (2 Oct): Wake up in the hills. Check in and look around.

●      Saturday (3 Oct): Your big day. Trek, fly, or ride into the dunes.

●      Sunday (4 Oct): Take a slow morning, then head back in the evening.

●      Monday (5 Oct): You reach Delhi around sunrise. Shower. Go to work.

The Monday arrival catches first-timers off guard. If it bothers you, choose a closer pick like Shangarh, or take Monday off. Leaving on Friday night is possible too, but you lose a full day at the destination. I'd pick the Thursday departure every time.

The 10 Best Gandhi Jayanti Long Weekend Trips from Delhi

1. Shangarh: The Meadow Nobody's Rushing To

At a glance: about 470 km | Sainj Valley, Himachal | meadow village, 2,100 m | easiest pick here

Want a hill village without the crowds? Start here. Shangarh sits inside the Great Himalayan National Park’s buffer zone in Kullu, a UNESCO World Heritage site that keeps big hotels and tour buses away. The drive runs via Aut and Sainj, then a narrow road climbs the last stretch to the meadow.

You reach Shangarh by afternoon and spend the rest of the day doing very little. Walk across the giant, cedar-ringed meadow, visit the wooden Shangchul Mahadev temple, or sit with a coffee and watch the light change. The next day is for an easy trail into the forest around Ganjau Thatch, or a walk down to Sara village.

Why October? The monsoon is over, the meadow turns gold-green, and the sky stays clear most days.

Honest warning: the last stretch of road is narrow and unpaved in places, and landslides can shut it during heavy rain. Ask your trip captain about the route before you leave, especially after a wet spell.

Booking a Delhi to Shangarh tour package for this weekend? Our Shangarh Sainj Valley trip fits a 3-day plan. It also works well for anyone who wants a quiet meadow escape without a big trek.

2. Chopta, Tungnath & Chandrashila: Mini Switzerland Vibes

At a glance: 400–450 km | Chopta 2,680 m | Tungnath 3,680 m | easy to moderate

Chopta is a meadow village in Uttarakhand, and people call it the "Mini Switzerland of India." From Chopta, Tungnath temple is about 3.5 km on foot. Many call it the highest Shiva temple in the world. Chandrashila is another 1.5 km up, near 4,000 metres. On a clear day, you see Nanda Devi, Trishul and Chaukhamba.

A typical Chopta Tungnath weekend trip goes like this. You board at Preet Vihar metro at night. You reach Chopta by afternoon and settle into camp. The next morning, you trek to Tungnath and Chandrashila, which takes around four hours. On the last day, you walk to Deoria Tal, then drive home and reach Delhi early Monday.

Warning: nights get cold, sometimes close to freezing. Pack thermals and a proper jacket.

Want the route in detail? Read ourChandrashila trek distance guide. Ready to book? See ourChopta Tungnath trek package for the Chopta Chandrashila trek from Delhi.

3. Tirthan Valley & Jibhi: Slow Days by a River

At a glance: 460–500 km | river villages | short, easy walks | quietest pick here

If your ideal break is a river, a book and no crowds, choose Tirthan. The valley sits next to the Great Himalayan National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Autumn is a lovely time to visit, with clear skies and calm days.

A Tirthan Valley trip from Delhi usually runs like this. You reach Aut early and drive to Gushaini, where your riverside stay waits. After lunch, you walk to Chhoie Waterfall. The next day, you can try trout fishing, hike up to Raghupur Fort, then drive to Jibhi for its waterfall and cafés. Feeling strong? Serolsar Lake is a longer day trek. You drive to Jalori Pass, then walk two to three hours.

Warning: the route passes through Mandi, where landslides hit this monsoon. Ask your trip captain about road conditions the day before you leave.

4. McLeodganj & Triund: Tibetan Cafés Plus a Ridge Camp

At a glance: 480–520 km | Triund 2,827 m | camp on the ridge | great first trek

McLeodganj goes by the nickname "Little Lhasa." Expect Tibetan markets, monasteries and momos on every corner. You spend the first day in town. Walk to Namgyal Monastery and the Tsuglagkhang complex, then relax in a café.

The next morning, you climb to Triund. The trail runs about 7 km with gentle slopes and clear paths, so it suits first-time trekkers. At 2,827 metres, you camp under the Dhauladhar range with the Kangra Valley below. On the way down, stop at Bhagsu Waterfall.

Here's the honest part. Triund is popular, so it gets crowded. Start early for quieter trails and better photos.

The road runs through Dharamshala, so check conditions before you leave. Travel in daylight where you can.

Book aMcLeodganj Triund trek package, or see theTriund trek packages from Delhi. Not sure when to go? Ourbest time to trek Triund guide helps.

5. Bir Billing: Fly Over the Dhauladhars

At a glance: about 520 km | tandem paragliding | Tibetan monasteries | low effort

Want a thrill without a hard trek? Try Bir Billing. It's India's paragliding hub. Our Bir Billing paragliding package runs on fixed Friday departures. It includes a Gunehar Falls trek, a stay and meals. Since 2 October is a Friday, the timing fits well.

You take off from Billing, at around 2,400 metres, and glide down toward Bir. You fly tandem with a certified pilot, so you need no experience. The rest of your time is easy. Wander through the Tibetan colony, visit a monastery, or sit in a café with a view.

Is October a good time? Yes. Skies are usually clear after the monsoon. But pilots cancel flights in bad weather. Don't lock in anything rigid for Sunday afternoon.

If you want a Bir Billing paragliding package from Delhi, start with ourBir Billing paragliding page. OurBir Billing tour packages guide explains what to expect.

6. Harshil: Apple Orchards on the Way to Gangotri

At a glance: about 500 km | Bhagirathi valley | apple orchards | easy pace

Harshil is a village on the Bhagirathi river in Uttarkashi district, about 25 km short of Gangotri. It's known as the apple bowl of Uttarakhand, and orchards planted over a century ago by a British settler still cover the hillside. The night ride crosses Rishikesh and Uttarkashi before the road narrows and starts to follow the river.

October catches the tail end of the apple harvest, so the trees are still full and the air smells faintly of cider. By day, you walk through Deodar forest, cross into the villages of Bagori and Dharali, and spend an afternoon by the water. This trip is for slow walks, orchard photos and quiet river time.

Two honest notes. The drive is long, so plan to sleep on the bus. And the road past Uttarkashi narrows in places, so ask your operator about conditions before you leave.

Booking a Delhi to Harshil tour package for this weekend? Check our upcoming departures from Delhi page for the next batch. It works well as an easy, Gangotri-adjacent trip for anyone who wants orchards and river views without a big trek.

7. Kasol & Kheerganga: Hot Springs at the Top

At a glance: about 520 km | 12 km trek | about 3,000 m | tents and hot water

Kasol sits by the Parvati River and is known for its cafés and laid-back vibe. Kheerganga is the reward at the top of a longer trek.

Here's how a Kasol Kheerganga trek from Delhi works. You reach Kasol in the morning and spend the day on the riverside. The next day, you drive about 15 km to Barshaini, where the 12 km trek starts. It takes most people five to six hours. At the top, you soak in hot springs and sleep in a tent. Next morning, you walk down and drive back to Delhi.

Autumn is a good season for it. Some trail patches can stay slippery after the rains, so wear grippy shoes.

A small request: carry your trash back down. Kheerganga gets heavy foot traffic, and litter piles up fast.

Choose ourKasol Kheerganga package or theKheerganga trek package. Read ourKasol Kheerganga preparation guide before you go.

8. Manali: The Classic That Still Works

At a glance: about 540 km | 12–14 hours | Solang, Atal Tunnel, Old Manali

Manali isn't offbeat, but it's the easiest choice for a first trip. The drive from Delhi takes 12 to 14 hours. Once you arrive, the sightseeing list is short and fun. Visit Hadimba Devi Temple, walk the cafés of Old Manali, and try the hot springs near Vashisht.

The best day is the Solang Valley trip. You pass through the 9 km Atal Tunnel to Sissu, then return to Solang for activities like zorbing and zip-lining. Our Manali plan also adds a night in Kasol, so you get mountains and river cafés in one trip.

Honest warning: this is the busiest place on the list. Traffic near Mandi and Kullu can add hours, and prices jump on holiday weekends. Book early.

Looking for a Manali Kasol tour package from Delhi? See ourthree-day Manali Kasol package. Want extra time? The3N/4D Manali Kasol package gives you a longer stay.

9. Udaipur & Mount Abu: Lakes, Palaces and a Hill Station

At a glance: about 650 km | overnight ride | heritage stay | relaxed pace

Udaipur suits you when you want easy walks, good food and pretty views. You spend two nights in a heritage-style hotel. Days cover City Palace, a boat ride on Lake Pichola, and sunset at Monsoon Palace. Our Udaipur plan also includes a Rajasthani cultural show.

Mount Abu is a day trip. It's a drive of about three and a half to four hours, with stops at Nakki Lake and the Dilwara Jain temples. Prefer forts? Swap it for Kumbhalgarh, a UNESCO site known for its very long wall. Don't try both. That's too much road for three days.

Days in early October are warm but comfortable, and evenings feel mild. Flights to Udaipur cost a lot on holiday weekends, which is one reason a bus-based group package saves money.

Pick theUdaipur Mount Abu tour package or theUdaipur Kumbhalgarh tour package. Both make an easy Udaipur weekend trip from Delhi.

10. Jaisalmer: Sleep Under Desert Stars

At a glance: about 780 km | overnight ride | Sam dunes camp | easy pace

Jaisalmer is the farthest trip here, so treat the ride as part of the adventure. Our Jaisalmer weekend group leaves Delhi at 6:30 pm and reaches the Sam Dunes camp early the next afternoon. You go for a jeep safari, watch the sunset, and enjoy a bonfire with folk music.

Day two is for sightseeing. Plan stops at Longewala Post, Tanot Temple, Patwon ki Haveli, Jaisalmer Fort, Gadisar Lake and Bada Bagh. Then you take the overnight bus home.

Be honest with yourself about the ride. It's long. Bring a neck pillow. Also, October afternoons in the desert can still feel hot, while nights turn pleasant.

A Jaisalmer tour package from Delhi is the easy way to do it. Check ourJaisalmer weekend trip from Delhi for departure details.

Want to Honour Gandhi on the Day?

You don't have to skip the mountains to remember Bapu. Try a short morning visit before your bus leaves. Gandhi Smriti is where he spent his last 144 days. Raj Ghat, by the Yamuna, marks where he was cremated. The National Gandhi Museum holds original books, photos and documents. Two hours is plenty. Then carry the idea with you on the trip: travel light, waste less, and walk more.

Got a Leave or Two? Go Bigger

Take Thursday 1 October or Monday 5 October, and more doors open:

●      Kashmir: You'll need four or five days, and most people fly.

●      Spiti Valley: Our Spiti trip runs 5 nights and 6 days, so save it for a longer break. See theSpiti Valley road trip from Delhi.

Before You Book: A Practical Checklist

Book now

Group departures and good stays sell out first on long weekends. Train tickets open 60 days before travel, so the window for a 2 October journey has already passed. Most train seats are likely gone. A package with transport included saves you the scramble.

Check the roads

This monsoon caused landslides in parts of Himachal and Uttarakhand. Even after rain slows, some roads stay slow or shut. Check your route the day before you leave. Also read your package's fine print. Many operators say extra costs from landslides or weather delays fall on the traveller.

Pack smart

Bring layers, trek shoes with grip, a rain jacket, a power bank, some cash and a photo ID. Mountain nights get cold, even when the days feel warm.

Watch the altitude

Triund, Kheerganga and Chopta sit at roughly 2,700 to 3,000 metres or higher. Walk slowly and drink water. Tell your trip captain if you feel dizzy. Never push through a bad headache.

Know it's usually a dry day

Gandhi Jayanti is usually a dry day across India, so bars and liquor shops are often shut. Check local rules if that matters to you.

Travel the Gandhi way

Carry your trash out. Keep music low in quiet valleys. Stay in local homestays when you can. It costs little and helps villages more than big hotels do.

Pick One and Book It

Still stuck? Choose by ride time and mood. First trip, zero effort? Try Shangarh. First trek? Try Triund. Want views? Go to Chopta. Need calm? Pick Tirthan. Want a rush? Fly at Bir. Love culture? Choose Udaipur. Whether you prefer Himachal tour packages, Uttarakhand tour packages or Rajasthan tour packages, the best trip is the one you actually book this week.

Triund suits first-timers best — it’s a gentle 7 km trail with good grip needed underfoot. If you’d rather skip climbing altogether, Shangarh is an easy meadow village with short, flat walks instead of a trek.

It depends on the place. Prices on our package pages start lower for Chopta and higher for Bir Billing. Long-weekend batches can cost more, so check the page for today's price.

Mostly yes, but check first. Landslides can block roads after heavy monsoon rain. Travel in daylight when you can, and ask your trip captain about the route.
